Alan S. Gutman

Alan S. Gutman is an accomplished trial lawyer with more than 30 years of courtroom experience. While most cases settle before trial, he has tried more than 50 cases to verdict before a jury and, over all, has tried hundreds of cases in state and federal courts, arbitrations and before administrative agencies.

He has successfully represented a vast array of clients in business, real estate and entertainment matters including numerous members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; Grammy, Emmy and Academy Award winners; motion picture, television, media, recording and publishing companies and executives; managers; agents; artists; athletes; investors; commercial real estate developers, managers and owners; financial, internet and technology companies; international corporations; entrepreneurs; estates; trustees; and, other individuals and businesses in all types of cases.

Since forming his own law firm in 1990, the emphasis has always been on achieving cost-effective results through aggressive advocacy.

Admitted to practice law before all courts in the State of California, the United States District Court for the Central District of California, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court, Mr. Gutman graduated from New York University and Southwestern University School of Law, completed an advanced certificated program in trial evidence at USC, and has been admitted to the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA).

John Juenger, Of Counsel

Mr. Juenger is a successful litigator with more than 20 years of experience since graduating from USC Gould School of Law. He is admitted to practice law before all courts in the State of California and the United States District Court for the Central District of California.

Matthew E. Hess

Matthew Hess has more than 25 years of experience as a trial lawyer and commercial litigator since graduating from NYU School of Law.

Over the past 25 years, he has acquired material experience across an unusually broad range of subject matters, including as to both transactional and litigation matters. He often works in relation to the entertainment and real estate industries.

As a litigator, Mr. Hess boasts an impressive record of victories at trial and on appeal. His victories include a $33,000,000 judgment in a vigorously litigated copyright infringement suit.

Notable Representations

 Successfully resolved a class action lawsuit seeking statutory damages in excess of $36,000,000 for just $70,000 after very hard-fought litigation.

 Obtained summary judgment on the issue of liability in a class action against one of the nation’s largest privately-held companies, in action where damages exceeded $8,000,000.

 Obtained reversal of dismissal of antitrust class action lawsuit in Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

 Obtained reversal of dismissal of class action lawsuit involving violations of the California Business & Professions Code in case of first impression involving issues of administrative jurisdiction.

 Certification of a class action against one of the nation’s largest cellular telephone networks featuring claimed out-of-pocket damages of over $100,000,000.

 A defense verdict in a dispute over an opulent probate estate;

 The dismissal of multiple wage and hour claims before the California Labor Commission.

 Dozens of successful appeals in state and federal appellate courts including the California Supreme Court.Defense of several class actions alleging violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the Truth-In-Lending Act, and state usury laws.
